In the early stages of business, it is so tempting to DIY your visuals just to save a few bucks. When Lauren Baker, a pediatric speech therapist and owner of Baker Speech Therapy, started her private practice, she was still working as an adjunct professor and didn’t have a full caseload to support taking her business full-time. She quickly found that she was wasting so much time inside Canva, and the results didn’t make her look like the professional she wanted to be. Today, we are looking back at her journey and why she decided that the professional branding cost was a non-negotiable for her long-term success.
Lauren’s project included: custom brand design, additional brand enhancement designs like freebies and social media templates, and a retired offer that is now my Website in a Week.
If you want to hear Lauren’s first-hand account of how impactful our work together was, you can listen to the podcast episode here:
One of the biggest challenges Lauren faced was the sheer amount of time she spent on the road as a mobile provider, driving about 1,300 miles a month. When she finally had a moment of downtime, she didn’t want to spend it spending hours sifting through design templates. She realized that her time was her most valuable asset, and trying to be a designer on top of being an SLP and practice owner was draining her capacity.
Lauren struggled with massive decision fatigue whenever she opened Canva. She found herself second-guessing every color and font choice, which wasted brain power that should have been spent on her clients. By investing in professional branding, she eliminated those endless choices, allowing her to focus on high-level CEO decisions instead.
For Lauren, the cost of a logo design was less about a single graphic and more about paying for the convenience of an expert-led process. She recognized she wasn’t the expert in design and didn’t want to waste time building a website or marketing materials that she would eventually have to redo. Paying for that convenience early on allowed her practice to take off as fast as it did.

Within 18 months, Lauren’s business grew from a solo practice to a team with contractors in both New York and Chicago. Having a consistent brand identity was a huge part of that expansion. It wasn’t just about looking “pretty”; it was about building a system that could travel across state lines.
When Lauren pitched herself to school districts, she used her branding in her presentations to show up as a legitimate, professional company. This same level of professionalism made other therapists reach out specifically wanting to work with her. Her brand communicated authority before she even spoke a word.
Lauren noted that a valuable part of the process was seeing her brand in mock-ups, or what I call the “brand in the wild.” Seeing how the logo, fonts, and colors worked together on pamphlets, billing documents, and social media allowed her to see the cohesive vision. This gave her the confidence to stop hiding and start growing.

The ultimate ROI for Lauren hasn’t just been a beautiful website, but the ability to lead a company that parents trust. One of her clients even told her that her practice was the most professional company they had ever worked with, precisely because her branding didn’t feel sterile or generic. Lauren stopped watering the doubt she had in her own design skills and started watering her mission as an SLP leader.
Lauren’s story is such a powerful reminder that you don’t have to wait years to look like a premium brand. In fact, looking like a professional is often the very thing that gives you the confidence to scale as fast as she did. If you’re tired of wasting hours in Canva and you’re ready to invest in a brand that does the heavy lifting for you, I’d love to help.
