What is Brand Design? The Ultimate Guide to Building a Brand Identity

Branding
April 15, 2024

Have you ever looked at a tree and thought, “Wow, that’s a lot like building a brand”? No? Just me? Sounds a bit out there, right? But hang in there with me, because I’m breaking it all down on the blog today! We’re getting into the nitty-gritty of brand design and development—there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes! But first, let me paint you a picture that might just change the way you think about branding. Imagine your brand as a tree. Before a tree grows big and strong, it starts as something much simpler: a seed, rooted in the ground. I like to think that’s a lot like your brand. Now, let’s dig a bit deeper (pun totally intended).

Thinking about launching a new website or giving your brand a makeover? I’ve got your back. Just hit me up here and we’ll get the ball rolling!

But First.. What IS Branding, Anyway?

So, what is branding in the first place? Think of it as the personality of your company. It’s everything from the story you tell, the values you stand by, to the colors and fonts you think are cool. But, and here’s the kicker, it all starts from the ground up. You wouldn’t slap paint on a house without a solid foundation, right? Same goes for branding.

Rooted in Understanding: The Core of Your Brand

Ready to get back to my tree example? Let’s start with the roots. This is the behind-the-scenes stuff that no one really sees but is super important! It’s what your business believes in, your why, and what makes you, well, you. To get to the heart of this for my clients, I kick things off with a questionnaire. It’s optional, though—and we can run through it together on a Zoom call if you prefer to talk out your feelings instead of write them all down! This way, I get to really understand your business and vision.

Once we’ve got that down, we start building your brand strategy, which is like deciding which way we want your tree to grow.

The Trunk: Building a STRONG Brand That Stands the Test of Time

Once we have the roots in place, the trunk of our tree is all about your brand’s mission, values, and personality. It’s the stuff that holds everything else up. Just like how a strong trunk supports a tree, a clear brand mission and personality support all your marketing and business efforts. Think of getting clear on this stuff like personal growth but for your business. It really does matter when it comes to building a brand because all of this work compounds over and over again.

Branching Out: The Fun Visual Stuff (What You Think Of When Building a Brand)

Now, let’s talk about what might come to mind when you think about building a brand: the visuals! Once we’ve got our roots deep and our trunk sturdy, it’s time to branch out—literally. This is where the fun begins. The branches and leaves are what everyone sees: your logo, your website, your patterns, your social media graphics, your fonts and colors – all the snazzy visuals. This is where we bring your brand to life, making it visible and vibrant. But remember, without a strong foundation, those branches won’t reach very far.

The Fruits of Your Labor: Tangible Success

And then, there’s the fruit. This is the payoff—customer loyalty, brand recognition, and all that good stuff that comes from having a well-nurtured brand. It’s what happens when you’ve taken care of the roots, built up a sturdy trunk, and let your branches flourish. When the design and brand identity you’ve created intentionally starts to attract your ideal clients, they become lifelong fans because of your mission, vision, and what your brand stands for in this world. This is also how your brand starts to create raving fans!

Laying Down the Strategy

Alright, now that I’ve given you all of the tree puns, let’s dive into how we build a brand that not only looks good but also resonates. First up, we nail down what your brand stands for—its purpose. It’s all about understanding the big ‘why’ behind what you’re doing. Next, we pinpoint who you’re trying to reach with your message (that’s your target audience) and sketch out what success looks like for you (hello, vision).

Diving Into the Fun Stuff

Now, it’s time to dive into the fun part: bringing your brand’s look to life. Let’s break down the three things you definitely need:

  • Your Logo + Submarks: Your logo? It’s gotta be strong and memorable (even if you choose to opt for a minimal logo). You want it to pop and stick in people’s minds, making a lasting impression.
  • Color Palette: Choosing your brand’s colors is super important. They’ve got to look good, sure, but they also need to vibe with what you’re all about and appeal to the folks you’re trying to reach. I’m a big fan of using color to help your brand stand out!
  • Font Choices: The fonts you use are a big deal because they carry your message. They’ve got to be clear and readable, first and foremost. Style matters, but not at the expense of people actually getting what you’re saying.

So, focusing on these bits isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about crafting a visual identity that truly represents your brand. And that’s what is going to make people take notice.
